FIREDANCERS OF BORACAY - FIRING UP THE NIGHTLIFE IN BORACAY

As night time fell in Boracay, the sea in this beach town of bright, powdery sand dries up during low tide signalling the end of beach activities for the day and start of a bright, lively and colorful night.  Hotels are prohibited to serve food and drinks on the beach during the day but as the late afternoon ushers in the darkness, the beachfront suddenly transforms itself into an outdoor club and restaurant.
Of course no one will let the opportunity to get a glimpse of the spectacular Boracay sunset before calling it a day.  The low transforms the beach into a vast field of sand where beachgoers, previously swimming enjoys the cool afternoon breeze by playing land sports such as volleyball, frisbee, badminton or simply shoot away with their cameras as the sun slowly fades into the horizon.
Each beachfront hotel begins to cook its own gimmick of offering cheap affordable dinner coupled with some entertainment to attract potential customers.  Many offer eat-all-you can packages for the hungry vacationers while some offer relaxing entertainment while sipping their favorite drink and all these happen directly on the sandy beach.  You can hop on each of these establishments and take your pick.

There are no more peaceful night of stargazing on the beach in Boracay.  There are no more quiet contemplations while sitting on the sand, staring at the frolicking waves from afar.  Don't expect solitary soul-searching in this party place.  No. Boracay is what many consider as a social venue for parties, loud noise, bottomless, drinks, gluttonous eating and carnal pleasures.  If you're the type looking for solitude here, you won't find it in White Beach because because all these quiet vibes will be driven away by the sheer, loud atmosphere of the Boracay nightlife.

One can still have that romantic moment if you're not the picky type who craves for a string quartet  serenading you while  having your candlelight dinner by the beach.  Just a simple, quiet lobster dinner that's  reasonably priced enough for anyone seeking the opportunity to experience this exotic seafood.  You just have to contend with the typical beach vendor who will occasionally approach you and offer you traditional street foods such as balut, chicharon and some novelty items that's fun to use in the beach.  Yes! that is the dinner package that Boracay candle light dinner has in store for you. There are still some establishments that don't have that loud entertainment for customers who just simply want to enjoy Boracay night without the party sounds.

Well if you're the type who prefers partying all night, this is the easiest to find because Boracay nights is what partying is all about.  There are many hotels putting up a party tent each night and they have lots of genre of music you can listen and enjoy while having dinner or sipping your favorite cocktail drinks.  Summer in Boracay is for Filipinos.  Our countrymen dominates this place at the peak of summer because of the many vacations in schools and summer outings of offices.  However, during the off-season, the place looks like a foreign resort because foreigners dominate  Boracay.  So if you prefer a quiet Boracay vacation in the midst of foreigners, clad in skimpy bathing suits, go there during the off season.  But if you prefer a summer party with loud music and plenty of people, go to Boracay in the summer.

Strolling at night can be fun in Boracay also. The tide ebbs away from the coast and you will be left with a wide stretch of sand in the dark.  Don't expect a night swim near the treeline.  The water will be very far from the treeline and probably be a naughty time to skinny dip if you're the daring type.  However, I wouldn't recommend it.  Viewing the coastline from where I am, Boracay is really infested with city lights that sooner or later will lead to the demise of this once pristine place.  I remember having read one article from Deep Ecology, a hardcore group,  that in prehistoric times, the Earth can be viewed from outer space as a dark planet; a sign that the planet is in a pristine, rugged condition.  In the present time however, when you view the Earth from outer space, you'll be surprised to find the planet littered with lights; a sign that the planet is already in a sick state.  This is very much the same sentiment I feel towards Boracay.

The best dinner experience one can have in Boracay is a lobster dinner.  The strategy for this opportunity to dine in style was simple.  We were usually having a 3 full meals with snack throughout the day in beachside restaurants that were classy.  On the 2nd day we decided to have a lobster dinner but it was a little bit expensive.  So in order to dine in style that night, we decided to be prudent throughout the day by having cheap breakfast and lunch at D'Mall carinderia where the food is a lot cheaper.  So come evening we have the budget to have the lobster dinner by the sea with a perfect view of the ebb tide and listen to the folk-laden entertainment for the evening.

The entertainment for the night was folk music.  I don't usually go for loud disco music where people are shouting and dancing although they are really quite fun to see.  I prefer to listen to folk music because I myself was prolific in playing the guitar but as I grew older, my hands began to shake and can no longer press long upon the frets of the guitar, so I just settled for singing in videokes.

Of course the most interesting part of the night was the entry of the fire dancers.  These extreme group of dancers are usually composed of people from the "becky" sector of society but are very good in their craft.  I got an opportunity to pose with one while she was playing with fire.  They demonstrated many routines and techniques to the delight of the crowd.   I think a visit to Boracay will never be complete without watching these daredevils in the flesh.  This vacation was filled not only with breathtaking scenes of the Boracay land and seascape but with entertainment of the unique kind.  A rest and recreation for body and mind indeed!

It will take some adjustment on your camera to capture moments like this.  I like this one because of the shape that the dancer created.  However, I became obscured as I became dark in the foreground.

This shot created a silhoutten of my shape.  At least you'll know that it is me judging from the size.  I was able to pose with a female fire dancer this time.

This is another photo of a male fire dancer although I was not able to photograph his exhibitions very well.

Finally, I was able to pose with one of the "becky" fire dancers.  She was exceptionally skillful with the fire.  And because of that I gave her a fat tip for her performance!

Well, that's it my friends!  That's my story of the Boracay Fire Dancers.  Did you know that when you wake up in the morning, you'll be surprised to find out that it looked like there was no partying that happened the night before?  The beachfront hotels are very fast in setting up tents in the afternoon in preparation for the evening's party and just like that they can immediately dismantle the tents right after the party that when you wake up in the morning you will be greeted by a clear, clean beach as if nothing happened the night before.    That's Boracay man and it only happens here in the Philippines! That's why it's more fun here folks!  So till the next story my friends! Stay healthy!  Travel and Tell!

BORACAY STROLL - CAPTURING IMAGES OF PRESENT-DAY BORACAY

This is the first time I went to Boracay and I know it is already way too changed compared to Boracay back in the 80's when there were still nudist colonies during that time.  I  just dont' belong to the fortunate ones to have visited this island in its early days.  I don't know whether to envy them or to blame them for what is Boracay today.  I'm probably part of society who just have to contend with whatever leftovers the rich and affluent ones left in this island very much like the master throwing chicken bones to his pet dog.

We are now part of society that has to follow rules in keeping Boracay from deteriorating any further.  We are the generation of visitors that have to pay so-called "environmental fees" even though we're not pretty sure that these funds are indeed being used specifically to maintain the Boracay ecosystem or just another way for the local government to raise funds for other developmental projects in the province.  I'm not down playing their efforts but I hope that the time won't come when people would say "I told you so!" everyone seems to have the same foresight but none had the guts to champion the cause.  Everyone wants to tell the world that they have anticipated this but no one wants to come forward to work on it.  Sooner or later, this place will be stricken out of the list of the most beautiful beaches in the world despite countless write-ups about its deteriorating condition.
When I arrived on the island, the place undeniably has its charm locked on first-timers like me.  I was mesmerized by the powdery, white sand, the long-stretch beach, the beautiful people; local and foreign alike, the clear water with its algal bloom in check, the countless boats, yachts, parachutes, stores, pendants, food and everything else on one beach.  The least you can think of that Boracay doesn't have are moviehouses.  I am not sure if I am going to paint a nice picture for you about the place but since my blog is finding fun & adventure in virtually any place in the world, then I hope I can stimulate your mind to have fun with me as well.
This blog is all about Boracay!  When I went on a shooting spree around the beach, I tried to capture as many images where the name Boracay is written.  And for every picture with Boracay in it comes its individual story.

There is not much mountains to do vertical climbing in Boracay, so climbing fanatics have to contend with this wall for the moment.  With so many people around the island looking for hot babes and dudes, this is one venue where you can show off your skills grabbing, gripping and reaching the peak. So go for top man, if you can't deliver the right pick-up line. ha ha ha ha!

It's fiesta season my friend! And as the popular saying goes whenever you visit a place for the first time, "do as the Romas do!" So since Boracay is part of Aklan province, I think this is the nearest thing I can do to act like Aklanons. hi hi hi hi!

Business is really alive in Boracay! aside from the public restrooms for tourists.  But my advice to you is buy your sunglasses in your hometown where it is cheaper before going to Boracay.  It is best to spend your money on authentic Boracay souvenirs rather than sunglasses that you can buy anywhere in the world.

Diving is one of the best recreational activites in Boracay. It is quite expensive so most tourists that dive are foreigners.  I just enjoyed posing with their diving mascot.  Next time when I win the lottery, I'm going diving in my next visit!  I wish! ha ha ha ha!

McDonald's, Jollibee, Army-Navy, Burger King, whatever! It is still HAMBURGER! You can try it yourself and compare, compare, compare!  However, I suggest your try out something novel, one that you don't normally see in Manila or Luzon.  So when in Boracay, try a burger only found on the island.  TRY The Great BORACAY BURGER!

Refrigerator magnets are a good sight to see in Boracay! You have lots of choices to choose from.  I think this is the cheapest pasalubong you can buy for your loved ones.

This tarpaulin streamer will give you an idea of all the recreational activities in Boracay.  But let me warn you, they all come with a price!  The trick is to project yourself not be well-endowed with money or else these tour operators will eat you alive.  You can actually haggle for the price so don't settle immediately with the first price that they will mention.  If you're a first timer in the island, it would be best to have an island tour first before other activities, so at least you can get a glimpse of all the different beaches around the island aside from White Beach.

Each beachfront hotel has its own specialty to boast for ranging from cocktail drinks, hamburgers, refreshments, tattoos, massage services and for the Red Coconut their Brick Oven Pizza which they claim as Boracay's Best! It's a little bit pricey for the budget traveler but it's still worth the try.

This is one of the best attractions in the island.  People line up to buy this drink because it has been featured in many travel shows on TV.  It's a little bit pricey but at least you get to take home the container as souvenir.

This is one of the cheapest carinderia in the island.  It is located along the iskinita of the talipapa of DMall and it offers cheap, clean and delicious food.  It's main menu consists of seafoods and other Filipino dishes. Yum-yum indeed!

Who says one can't have a foot spa in Boracay.  Occasionally, one seeks a foot pampering now and then, Boracay is a good place to do that.  Foot pampering can be done leisurely mode without having to insert it in your schedule while waiting for your daughter during her ballet lesson or your mother doing her grocery.  Today you are the boss and everyone is on their feet at your delight.

Summer outfit is not a problem in Boracay.  There are clothes of all sizes for all ages.  You might even encounter the difficulty of choosing what to buy because of so many choices and so many stores selling so many merchandise.  At a certain point it puts to shame some of the popular tiangges in Metro Manila.
Biscocho Kalibo is one of your options when buying pasalubong for you loved ones back home.  It's best when eaten together with your favorite coffee in the morning.  Don't expect too much though.  The packaging is much better than it tastes.
Another shopping and eating area that you can go to is the D Talipapa.  It has a wide array of stores and eatery as well as a wet market where you get to choose the fresh seafood of meat of your choice and have it cooked hot and fresh so you can eat your heart out with your friends and loved ones.
There's even an internet center in Station 2 where you can update yourself with the latest email of facebook newsfeed or just post your latest pics on your facebook account.  Internet is really no problem in the island because hotels offer free wi-fi to its guests.  Just make sure you choose a hotel with a free wi-fi service.
If you still crave for city food, no problem! D Mall has many restaurants that are also common in popular malls in MetroManila. Name it, D Mall's got it!

Beach strolling in Boracay is fun and unique because of the blend of city and provincial life.  However, I did noticed that there are very few coconut trees along the beach and finding one with no people around for a photoshoot is rare to come by especially that most people stay in the shade of these tropical trees during noon time when the sun is steaming hot.
Sad thing about Boracay is that it has become so commercialized that billboards strewn everywhere makes it appear that this island paradise had been vandalized by the inhabitants themselves.

With so much commerce going on in the island, you'll never miss Manila.  It's just the beach that's going to be different.  You won't miss the traffic because there's traffic in the streets of Boracay.
We'll that's my story on Boracay during the day.  We stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights and on the 3rd day we headed back to Caticlan to stay for the night in time for the first flight the next day.  The quiet town of Caticlan will be another story in my blog next in the Dr. of Fun and Adventure.

BORACAY BEACHFRONT HOTELS - A GUIDE TO THE DO-IT-YOURSELFIE VACATIONER

Here I am again guys, on another information run about my much-awaited Boracay vacation!  After sharing some advice to the budget traveler, I will now be sharing some advice about the  more upscale level of accommodation in Boracay.  Of course everyone going on vacation on an island paradise such as Boracay will dream of staying in a beachfront hotel with a clear view of the sea in your hotel room window which will greet you upon waking up in the morning.  That will pretty sure paint a perfect picture of a Boracay adventure.

An ocean-view room in beachfront hotel in Boracay? Yes, there are some hotels with a view of the ocean from your bedroom window but for a room of this kind, you have to pay rates ranging from 6 thousand pesos + per day.  And if you are in Station 2, better cross-out this item in your to-have list in your Boracay vacation to save you from the disappointment.  There are no rooms like that in Station 2.  I must admit that this is also my dream room when going to Boracay.  But as soon as I made my reconnaisance of the beachfront hotels, I realized beachfront hotels just give you direct access to the beach and since the beach has shrunk too small, there is not much view to rave about.

Anyway, to have your hotel right in front of the beach still has its advantages.  You can go to the beach back and forth from your hotel as much as you can.  But if you are checked in far from the beach, and you left something in your hotel, it's very frustrating to make the trip back, so it spoils precious time to enjoy more.  The following hotels are true beachfront hotels in Station 2:

Choice no.1:  Le Soleil de Boracay

 Choice no.2:  Villa Rhazel

 Choice no. 3:  Seabird Hotel

Choice no. 4:  La Reserve Beach Resort

Choice no. 5:  Crystal Sand

Choice no. 6:  The District

Choice no. 7: The Boracay Beach Resort

Choice no. 8:  The Sand Castles

Choice no 9:  Red Coconut

 Choice no 10: Mango-Ray Resort

Choice no.11:  Shenna's Resort

Choice no. 12:  Club Manila East

Choice no. 13:  Deparis Beach Resort

 Choice no 13: Boracay Garden

Choice no 14:  Boracay Peninsula Resort

Choice no 15:  Boracay Regency Beach Resort

Choice no 16:  El Centro Resort

 Choice no 17:  Eclipse Resort

Choice no 18:  Victory Diver's Resort

Choice no 19: Boracay Beach Chalets

Choice no 20:  Villa De Oro

Choice no 21: La Carmela de Boracay

Choice no 22:  Alla Luna Rossa Hotel

Choice no 23:  Casa Pilar Beach Resort

Choice no 24: Bamboo Resort

These are just some of the beachfront resorts in White Beach Station 2:  I felt the need to give this advice because the first dilemma I had when I was looking for a hotel in the internet is the uncertainty whether the hotel is a beachfront hotel or not.  I don't want you to be disappointed if you reserved a hotel far inland that would spoil your entire vacation.

These are just bits of advices and it's still up to you to choose your hotel.  Just make sure that what happens in Boracay stays in Boracay.  Just make sure that what you do to Boracay doesn't damage its extrinsic and intrinsic beauty.  Let us make this place sustainable for future generations to enjoy it as well.
